Need for a real boarding school

Welcome in Nyakashambya

Education for girls

Since 2018, Oxfam-Wereldwinkel Veurne and the coffee cooperative ACPCU from Uganda have been jointly supporting this school. This way, girls in this region also get a chance of a decent education. A success, as pupil numbers increase year after year. As is the success rate of girls in the seventh grade.

How it began
Oxfam-Wereldwinkel Veurne has been closely involved with the Ugandan coffee farmers' cooperative ACPCU since 2014. In 2018, we visited them there and learned that the cooperative supported Nyakashambya primary school. How ? The cooperative's coffee farmers planted a coffee field near the school, with a promise to buy the harvested coffee beans from them at a fair price. The school invests the proceeds in better education. Inspired by this example, the volunteers from Veurne also set up actions for the school. Result: two classes finally received school desks, the school was able to have new windows installed and one of the school buildings received a protective coat of paint.
Need for a proper boarding school
For girls living far from school, boarding school is the only option. But there is no dormitory. The children sleep on mattresses in regular classrooms. The school dreams of building a proper girls' dormitory. This will allow even more girls to attend school, study in a safe environment and build a future in the years to come. Of course, the Oxfam-Wereldwinkel of Veurne and the local coffee cooperative are once again putting all their energy into making this dream come true into this dream. But that can only happen with your support.
Succes story!
The good results of Nyakashambya's students and especially the extra opportunities the school creates for girls soon went around the region. Today, parents send their children to this school from far and wide. Since 2016, pupil numbers have increased no less than eightfold: from 87 to 721 children by the end of 2022. A great success ... but the buildings are bursting at the seams.

Make this dream come true!

With your support, the Nyakashambya school can establish a full boarding school for the girls who attend school there. Make a donation and give them a future.

Visit from Uganda

John Nuwagaba, the general manager of the coffee cooperative ACPCU, our partner in this project, took the opportunity to visit us in Veurne inbetween a congress in the Netherlands and a coffee fair in Athens. We were able to discuss together how the construction of the boarding school will proceed and he expressed his gratitude to the volunteers from the Wereldwinkel for their years of commitment to the Nyakashambya Primary School. John was also received by the Mayor and aldermen of the city of Veurne who once again expressed their commitment to this beautiful project.
